‘Gray with Benefits’ Welcomes Downsizable to Podcast
We were honored to join the incredible hosts of the Gray With Benefits podcast for an inspiring conversation about the emotional and practical realities of downsizing. Hosted by Kelvin Brooks and Cheryl Warrick-Brooks, Gray With Benefits explores the many facets of aging with purpose — from lifestyle and wellness to caregiving and community — always with warmth, humor, and heart.
In our episode, “Making Room for What Matters: Downsizing for the Next Chapter,” we had the opportunity to share the story behind Downsizable and discuss what it really means to help older adults and their families navigate the deeply personal process of moving and letting go.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kelvin and Cheryl for welcoming us so graciously and giving us the space to reflect on why this work matters — not just to our clients, but to families everywhere who are facing major life transitions with love, courage, and care.
“The process of winding down a lifetime of possessions and memories to be able to move into a smaller footprint is very delicate work and it’s important work,” says Kate Anderson, one of Downsizable’s co-founder.
More Than Stuff—It’s Legacy
When someone approaches downsizing, they’re not just disposing of things. They’re navigating threads of life, family stories, milestones, regrets, and hopes. As Kate continues:
“You’re seeing the legacy of a family in this process. And it should not be done quickly.”
This framing shifts the work from “get rid of stuff” to “honor the strands of a life.”
Take Your Time: This Isn’t a Sprint
In a world seemingly in need of constant speed, the idea that downsizing should be a marathon is a counterintuitive but deeply wise one:
“The smoothest transition is a downsizing process over several weeks, not a sprint to the finish. It’s a marathon,” she tells the podcast hosts.
When we rush, we risk regret, undue stress, and decisions guided by exhaustion rather than thoughtful clarity.
Sustainability & Heart
Downsizable is committed to more than just efficiency or profit. It’s about care — care for the planet, for communities, for the next chapter.
“One of the bedrocks of our company is we do not want everything going to landfills. It’s extremely important to us as young mothers to think very long-term in terms of sustainability. We don’t want to overcrowd when we could be donating,” explains Blair Hammond, a co-founder of the company.
That sense of responsibility — to future generations, to planet Earth — is woven into their work. It’s not just about “smaller homes,” but about better systems, smarter options, and more compassionate practices.
Downsizing is about reimagining what we choose to carry forward — materially and emotionally. The quotes above are anchors to remember when it feels hard: slow is okay, legacy is real, and our choices ripple outward.
